Room guide
Garden office air conditioning
Garden rooms are cold in January and hot in July. A single split system deals with both, which is why it’s become the standard answer for anyone working from the bottom of the garden.

- Best system type
- Single splitOne small wall unit doing both the heating and the cooling.
- Typical fitting time
- Up to a dayOften half a day to a day, as the pipe run is short.
- Things to check
- A suitable electrical supply to the building
- A spot for the outdoor unit away from neighbours
- Any planning conditions about outside equipment
Heating and cooling in one
Most garden buildings have no radiators and lots of glass. A plug-in heater is expensive to run, and a fan does little in summer. A split system heats efficiently in winter and cools in summer from the same small indoor unit, so one installation covers the whole year.
Pick “Garden office” in the estimate and see a guide figure for it.
The practical bits
- PowerThe unit needs its own supply. Most garden offices already have an armoured cable from the house.
- Outdoor unitSits on the ground beside or behind the building, on a small base or feet.
- Pipe runVery short, often straight through the wall behind the indoor unit.
The estimate asks about the building and its glazing. See your figure on screen.
Planning and neighbours
Garden rooms are often close to a boundary. The outdoor unit is fairly quiet, but it is still worth keeping it away from a neighbour’s patio or bedroom window. If the building itself needed planning permission, check whether any condition mentions external equipment.

Garden office questions
Things people ask
Will it cope with a lot of glazing?
Yes, if it’s sized for it. Large glass doors increase the cooling needed, which the estimate and survey take into account.
Can I control it before I go out there?
Many units have an app, so you can warm or cool the room before you walk down the garden.
